	{"id":17779,"date":"2018-10-03T09:40:46","date_gmt":"2018-10-02T23:40:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=17779"},"modified":"2018-10-04T21:01:29","modified_gmt":"2018-10-04T11:01:29","slug":"shire-pours-in-its-thoughts-on-water-strategy-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/shire-pours-in-its-thoughts-on-water-strategy-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Shire pours in its thoughts on water strategy review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Surf Coast Shire\u2019s submission to a state government review of the wider region\u2019s water highlights environmental needs of the Barwon River and suggests greater community involvement in water management.<\/p>\n<p>The council resolved at its September meeting to receive and note the submission to the Central Region Sustainable Water Strategy Review, which acknowledges strategy achievements and outlines ongoing concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The strategy was released with a 50-year outlook in 2006 and updated in 2007, and is required to be reviewed at least every 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>The shire\u2019s submission welcomes increased environmental flows to the Barwon River and the transfer of part of Barwon Water\u2019s West Barwon Reservoir entitlements, but expresses concern that allocations might not be sufficient to meet the environmental needs of the river.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInadequate environmental flows for the Barwon River remain a significant concern for the Winchelsea community,\u201d the submission states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncil believes that this issue needs to be addressed in partnership with the community, together with consideration of any potential future trade-offs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The submission supports strategy achievements and commitments in use of recycled water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to supporting the development of wastewater and recycled water infrastructure, Council will be working in partnership with Barwon Water to explore potential use of recycled water to support agricultural and agri-tourism development in the hinterland, particularly in the vicinity of Black Rock and Winchelsea water reclamation plants,\u201d the submission states.<\/p>\n<p>It also notes that although the Anglesea River is not within the scope of the strategy, the health of the river is a concern to the Anglesea community.<\/p>\n<p>The council\u2019s submission supported consideration of greater community involvement, and use of local knowledge, in water management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe high level of community interest in the health of waterways in the shire, including the Barwon and Anglesea rivers, demonstrates local communities want greater, ongoing involvement in water management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shire mayor David Bell said the council welcomed opportunity to contribute to the important strategy review.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecuring of regional water supply is essential for helping our community and environment to thrive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is critically important that we reflect the views of our communities, particularly when significant concerns exist.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Surf Coast Shire\u2019s submission to a state government review of the wider region\u2019s water highlights environmental needs of the Barwon River and suggests greater community involvement in water management.
