As reported in previous weekly Community Updates published in the Surf Coast Times, Alcoa and principal contractor Industrial Demolition Services had been planning the demolition of the Anglesea power station for some months.<\/p>\n
At the time of finalising this update (2 October) the structure was scheduled to be felled using controlled explosives on 3 or 4 October, pending favourable weather conditions and subject to final safety and technical checks.<\/p>\n
Alcoa and Industrial Demolition Services worked with government agencies including Worksafe Victoria, EPA Victoria and emergency services (Victoria Police, State Emergency Service and Country Fire Authority) to plan for the demolition.<\/p>\n
Preparations included a comprehensive twelve-month asbestos removal program, a process regulated by Worksafe Victoria.<\/p>\n
The remaining structure is predominantly steel which will be recycled.<\/p>\n
Feedback about the demolition activity, including a summary of air monitoring results, will be presented at next week\u2019s Alcoa Community Consultation Network meeting and in the community update in the Surf Coast Times.<\/p>\n
As part of Alcoa\u2019s ongoing consultation with the Anglesea community, two public information sessions were held last week.<\/p>\n
Sixteen people attended the sessions to discuss the demolition with representatives from Alcoa, Industrial Demolition Services, Worksafe Victoria and EPA Victoria.<\/p>\n
