{"id":177941,"date":"2026-01-11T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=177941"},"modified":"2026-01-08T11:40:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T00:40:00","slug":"torquay-beach-buzzes-for-iron-classic-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/torquay-beach-buzzes-for-iron-classic-return\/","title":{"rendered":"Torquay beach buzzes for Iron Classic return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORQUAY&#8217;S back beach came alive on the first weekend of 2026, as the renowned Jim Wall Iron Classic returned on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>In the Open Iron races, Victorian Thomas Lewis claimed victory in the men&#8217;s event, while New South Wales competitor Tully Elliot took out the female title.<\/p>\n<p>The men&#8217;s podium featured three Victorians, with Torquay local Archie Vernon finishing second and Matthew Gilling third.<\/p>\n<p>Torquay SLSC competition manager, Matt Henderson, said the club was pleased with how the 64th edition of the event unfolded.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we were pretty lucky with the weather and the conditions,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We were really blessed \u2013 we had some really close finishes for the Open Male and Female Iron.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/2026_Male_winner_Jim_10254.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thomas Lewis won the Male Open Iron event. Photo: STUDIO COLLINS PHOTOGRAPHY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had a really good field again, we had just over 300 competitors so we were fully subscribed from under-13s through to the open age groups.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was a really good atmosphere and vibe on the beach. I think Torquay surf beach really lends itself to the spectacle with the hill.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Henderson also acknowledged the significant contribution of volunteers, whose efforts ranged from set-up and registrations to merchandising.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s obviously a marquee event from the club&#8217;s perspective,&#8221; he said. &#8220;All the help makes a really big difference and reinforces the community aspect of the sport.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Jim Wall Iron Classic is one of the legs of the World Ocean Series Southern States Showdown, drawing high-calibre athletes from across the region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re really seeing that concept starting to take over,&#8221; Henderson said. &#8220;There&#8217;s a mini-tour in the southern states and the athletes are really gravitating to that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/2026_Jim_Wall_Classi_12158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The conditions were relatively calm at Torquay Main Beach on Sunday for the event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Henderson said the event had also delivered a strong fundraising outcome for the club.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From a fundraising perspective, it&#8217;s definitely been an improvement on prior years so we&#8217;re really happy with that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We really appreciate everything because we aim to make the event the best carnival in Victoria from an athlete experience perspective.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Being able to have an exciting program and some good prize money on offer, supported by a lot of product prizes, makes it really attractive to the athletes.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TORQUAY&#8217;S back beach came alive on the first weekend of 2026, as the renowned Jim Wall Iron Classic returned on Sunday.
