MORE than $25,000 has been raised for vital cancer research during this year’s Lighthouse Classic fundraising event.<\/p>\n

Close to 150 people attended a group walk on Sunday from Aireys Inlet Lighthouse to Moggs Creek and back in honour of those touched by cancer.<\/p>\n

Created by Janet Jones, a much-loved community member who faced cancer three times, the Lighthouse Classic began as a way to bring people together for hope and purpose.<\/p>\n

This year was the fourth edition since her passing, with her memory carried on by immediate family and friends.<\/p>\n

Janet’s son Harry Jones said the event again far exceeded expectations.<\/p>\n

“A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our group walk on Sunday. What an incredible morning it was!<\/p>\n

“We are beyond grateful for the support, energy and sense of community that surrounded the Lighthouse Classic. It was so special to see so many of you out there, proudly wearing your Lighthouse Classic caps, walking for reasons close to your hearts.<\/p>\n

“Thanks to this amazing community, we’ve already surpassed our fundraising target for cancer research, a milestone made possible by your generosity and support.”<\/p>\n

Walkers travelled from the Aireys Inlet Lighthouse to Moggs Creek and back.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

Since its inception, the Lighthouse Classic has raised more than $200,000 to fund a cancer research scientist at the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute (FECRI) in Ballarat.<\/p>\n

FECRI is Australia’s only community-funded regionally-based cancer research centre, which aims to help patients with a broad range of cancers.<\/p>\n
