{"id":178886,"date":"2026-01-28T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=178886"},"modified":"2026-01-21T18:51:28","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T07:51:28","slug":"record-numbers-attend-kids-surf-ed-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/record-numbers-attend-kids-surf-ed-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Record numbers attend Kids+ Surf Ed program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE eighth annual Kids+ Surf Ed program has gone down as a huge success, with record numbers hitting the waves in Torquay.<\/p>\n<p>More than 25 local children with disabilities were given the opportunity to improve confidence and skills in the water, learn about water safety and have fun at the beach.<\/p>\n<p>Surf Ed was led by the Kids+ Therapy Team and aided by volunteer surf lifesavers from Jan Juc and Torquay as well as staff from Torquay Marine Rescue.<\/p>\n<p>Kids+ physiotherapist Louise Daniels said there were so many magical moments this past week.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/20260113_SurfEd-44_46574.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The eighth edition of the Kids+ Surf Ed program was a huge success.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One nine-year-old child from Barwon Heads paddled for, and caught her very first wave \u2013 a huge moment for her and her family.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Torquay Marine Rescue took the children on jet ski rides, which is always so much fun. For some children, it is their first time on a beach, let alone seeing or riding a jet ski. It&#8217;s wonderful to witness!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She said the compassion shown by the volunteer surf lifesavers was nothing short of exceptional.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One volunteer, Leo, created an incredible wheelchair sand pump track, which was met with much excitement,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/20260113_SurfEd-50_46545.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More than 25 local children with disabilities participated in the Surf Ed program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Another volunteer, Isla, told of how she and her Kids+ buddy, Max, were hanging out, floating on their boards, playing a game of Would\u00a0You Rather.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Social interactions like this may seem commonplace to many families, but that is not always the reality for children with disabilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A huge thanks to Steve Jewson (JJSLSC), who has been instrumental not only in getting the partnership up and running, but in ensuring we have volunteers each year.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE eighth annual Kids+ Surf Ed program has gone down as a huge success, with record numbers hitting the waves in Torquay.
