{"id":179021,"date":"2026-01-22T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=179021"},"modified":"2026-01-21T21:39:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T10:39:11","slug":"book-fair-raises-10000-for-bushfire-relief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/book-fair-raises-10000-for-bushfire-relief\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Fair raises $10,000 for bushfire relief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE tenth edition of the Torquay Rotary Book Fair has gone down as one of the best yet, raising more than $10,000 for bushfire relief across the state.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of books lined the walls of the Surf Coast Secondary College across three days for a bargain price of just $2 each.<\/p>\n<p>A wide range of titles were available including non-fiction, romance, children&#8217;s picture books, sport, biographies and science fiction.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/IMG_0488_26626.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thousands of books lined the Surf Coast Secondary College this past week.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The children&#8217;s book zone was a big hit this year, with children enjoying quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of the fair.<\/p>\n<p>Local support organisation Story Dogs was a much-loved addition to this zone, with a special dog brought along to help reluctant young readers.<\/p>\n<p>Torquay Rotary Book Fair coordinator Neil Henderson said this year&#8217;s event was a major success, particularly with the current climate we are in.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/IMG_0481_26655.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Torquay Rotary&#8217;s Lesley Shedden with Story Dogs Geelong coordinator Karen Knuckey.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We set an ambitious goal of $10,000 to aid bushfire relief and the result was just amazing. We surpassed that figure before Saturday was up and it just keep ticking away.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fundraising has slowly been going the past few years, which is just incredible.
