{"id":179102,"date":"2026-01-22T12:58:38","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T01:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=179102"},"modified":"2026-03-13T12:23:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T01:23:49","slug":"wye-river-flood-recovery-next-steps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/wye-river-flood-recovery-next-steps\/","title":{"rendered":"SES outlines next steps after flood salvage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"886\" data-end=\"1005\">After a dramatic aerial salvage operation this morning, Wye River\u2019s flood recovery effort is shifting into a new phase.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1007\" data-end=\"1210\">A Black Hawk helicopter airlifted 14 cars and caravan chassis from beaches and rocky outcrops around Wye and Cumberland rivers \u2014 the result of last week\u2019s flash flooding that swept vehicles into the sea.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1007\" data-end=\"1210\">\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden; display: inline-block;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F1454593862897740%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=267&amp;t=0\" width=\"267\" height=\"476\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1212\" data-end=\"1328\">\n<p data-start=\"1212\" data-end=\"1328\">Vic SES operations manager Chris Longmore said the fast-paced recovery was a success, but the job was far from over.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1330\" data-end=\"1484\">\u201cNow we\u2019re focused on what comes next \u2014 assessing the environmental impact, supporting affected residents and coordinating longer-term recovery,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1486\" data-end=\"1701\">The recovered vehicles have been transported to a secure storage site, allowing owners and insurers to begin damage assessments. Photo: Vic SES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-start=\"1836\" data-end=\"1971\">\n<p data-start=\"1836\" data-end=\"1971\">\u201cWe\u2019ll continue working closely with land managers and Traditional Owners to decide what\u2019s possible and appropriate,\u201d Mr Longmore said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1973\" data-end=\"2153\">The Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation, the Environment Protection Authority, Surf Coast Shire and Colac Otway Shire are among the key agencies involved in post-recovery planning.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2155\" data-end=\"2285\">\u201cWe\u2019re in a highly sensitive environmental and cultural area. Photo: Vic SES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Local residents and businesses \u2014 already reeling from the flood and the temporary closure of the Great Ocean Road \u2014 are also being supported through the recovery process.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2459\" data-end=\"2525\">\u201cThis morning\u2019s operation was a huge milestone,\u201d Mr Longmore said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2527\" data-end=\"2627\">\u201cBut the recovery journey is only just beginning.
