{"id":179528,"date":"2026-01-29T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=179528"},"modified":"2026-01-28T19:00:44","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T08:00:44","slug":"final-term-fade-costs-venom-in-home-loss-to-adelaide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/final-term-fade-costs-venom-in-home-loss-to-adelaide\/","title":{"rendered":"Final-term fade costs Venom in home loss to Adelaide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A HORROR final term has seen the Geelong Venom give up a strong lead and go down to Adelaide in their penultimate WNBL home game of the season.<\/p>\n<p>The Venom led by as much as 13 points and were outscored in the last quarter by 14 points to lose 78-85 at the Geelong Arena last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the WNBL&#8217;s Pride Round, Geelong sported rainbow-tinged jerseys to celebrate and battled with the Lightning in a tight first half.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Venompili_96043.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"751\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alissa Pili looks to pass.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An impressive 32-point second quarter saw them claw back from an early deficit to take a two-point lead into the main break.<\/p>\n<p>The Venom extended their lead in the third term, with two Shyla Heal free-throws putting them up a match-high 13 points with four minutes remaining in the quarter.<\/p>\n<p>However, the visitors were up for the challenge and combined a late scoring run with tough defence to overcome the lead and send Geelong back to the bottom of the ladder.<\/p>\n<p>Mackenzie Holmes led the way for the home side again, dropping 23 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/venommackenzie_02180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mackenzie Holmes puts up a shot for the Venom.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jaz Shelley added 21 points and four steals.<\/p>\n<p>For Adelaide, Sania Feagin had 28 points and nine rebounds.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong now have just two matches remaining for the season as they look to avoid a wooden spoon finish.<\/p>\n<p>They will take on Bendigo in their final home clash today (Friday, January 30) in TAC&#8217;s Road Safety Round, before concluding their season on Sunday against Sydney at the Quaycentre.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A HORROR final term has seen the Geelong Venom give up a strong lead and go down to Adelaide in their penultimate WNBL home game of the season.
