{"id":182364,"date":"2026-03-13T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=182364"},"modified":"2026-03-11T16:03:04","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T05:03:04","slug":"film-reflects-on-life-in-gaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/living\/film-reflects-on-life-in-gaza\/","title":{"rendered":"Film reflects on life in Gaza"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A GROUP of Aireys Inlet residents formed Eyes on Palestine to present films about Palestine: its history, its people and the occupation.<\/p>\n<p>In March it is screening the film Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk, a film that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sepideh Farsi, an Iranian dissident and exile, Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk documents the daily life of a family in Gaza under sustained attack by Israeli forces.<\/p>\n<p>It does this through presenting a year of conversations between the director and Fatma Hassona, a 25-year-old Palestinian photojournalist and poet.<\/p>\n<p>The calls were conducted via WhatsApp, in between power cuts and internet disconnections.<\/p>\n<p>Under the constant barrage of Israeli missile fire, Hassona embodies the resilience, strength and hope of\u00a0her people.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/Fatmaonthephone2_58911.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The calls were conducted via WhatsApp, in between power cuts and internet disconnections.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As the year unfolds, the film paints an urgent visual diary of life in Gaza, capturing the escalating devastation and its impact on the Hassona family.<\/p>\n<p>On 16 April 2025, the day after it was announced the film was to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Hassona and six family members were killed in an Israeli airstrike on their house, sparking global condemnation of the attack.<\/p>\n<p>The film has become an elegy to Fatma and her family, but also to those who continue to be killed in Gaza, despite the ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk will screen at the Aireys Inlet Community Hall on 22 March\u00a0at 7pm.<\/p>\n<p>All proceeds will go to the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>To secure your tickets, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/trybooking.com\/DEUGK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trybooking.com\/DEUGK<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>\/\/SPONSORED CONTENT<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A GROUP of Aireys Inlet residents formed Eyes on Palestine to present films about Palestine: its history, its people and the occupation.
