{"id":18261,"date":"2018-10-11T07:37:33","date_gmt":"2018-10-10T20:37:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=18261"},"modified":"2018-10-11T23:12:28","modified_gmt":"2018-10-11T12:12:28","slug":"the-hope-song-comes-to-geelong-for-mental-health-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/living\/the-hope-song-comes-to-geelong-for-mental-health-week\/","title":{"rendered":"The Hope Song comes to Geelong for Mental Health Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Following a sold-out season at La Mama Courthouse in Melbourne, The Hope Song, an engaging theatre production exploring the lives of people with mental health experiences, will be presented October 12 and 13 at Geelong Courthouse Theatre.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Award-winning Surf Coast writer Janet Brown, is delighted that the play will be staged in Geelong during Mental Health Week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic to see that this play continues to interest audiences and I\u2019m so pleased that co-directors Iris Walshe-Howling and Janine McKenzie and Anglesea Performing Arts (APA) are able to offer this third season of the play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was first staged in October 2017 for Mental Health Week on the Surf Coast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI decided to explore \u2018verbatim theatre\u2019, which is theatre based on the true words spoken of people who have been interviewed,\u201d Janet said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that it would be a really powerful way to illuminate the issues and experiences of people who have mental health challenges. It\u2019s very interesting and humbling when people share their life experiences with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iris and Janet have worked together before on the short film \u201cWater, Water\u201d which was shown in a number of film festivals here and internationally, and won Silver at the Wasaga Film Festival in Canada in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The APA ensemble in partnership with WDV (Women with Disabilities Victoria) Barwon Hub will perform three shows only for Geelong audiences.
