{"id":183037,"date":"2026-03-20T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=183037"},"modified":"2026-03-18T21:28:50","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T10:28:50","slug":"local-pair-bow-out-of-wsl-challenger-event-at-newcastle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/local-pair-bow-out-of-wsl-challenger-event-at-newcastle\/","title":{"rendered":"Local pair bow out of WSL Challenger event at Newcastle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JAN Juc surfing duo Tully Wylie and Xavier Huxtable have finished their 2026 World Surf League Challenger Series with tough eliminations in the Newcastle Surfest.<\/p>\n<p>Wylie was unable to progress past the Round of 80 at the world tour event, while Huxtable edged into the Round of 64 but then had a narrow loss to Queenslander Alister Reginato and Holland&#8217;s\u00a0Oliver Zietz.<\/p>\n<p>Following the last event of the Challenger Series for 2026, Huxtable landed in 17th, narrowly missing out on a maiden berth on the Championship Tour.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/XavierHuxtable_25New_87728.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Huxtable with a big attacking turn off the top at Newcastle Surfest. Photo: Aaron Hughes\/World Surf League.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>His top 20 position is the highest in his career and puts him in good stead for another go at the Challenger Series in 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Wylie did enough to land in the top 100 &#8211; the first time he has achieved the feat.<\/p>\n<p>He will go back to the drawing board and look to lock in a spot on the Challenger Series through a strong Australia\/Oceania Qualifying Series season.<\/p>\n<p>Both surfers will now turn their attention to the Rip Curl Pro Trials at Bells Beach on 28 March &#8211; an event the pair have succeeded at before.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/TullyWylie_PhillipIs_87711.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tully Wylie walks in while Xavier Huxtable watches on.
