AFTER facing another delay, works to install traffic lights at a busy Torquay intersection are to begin after Easter.<\/p>\n
The Surf Coast Shire has addressed the delays to the Surf Coast Highway-Bristol Road intersection, issuing an apology to local residents.<\/p>\n
“We are sorry this project has taken longer than we all expected,” the shire’s general manager of placemaking and environment, Chris Pike, said.<\/p>\n
“We know this has been frustrating and we appreciate the community’s patience and understanding.”<\/p>\n
The apology follows a statement issued via social media last week acknowledging the project has not gone to plan.<\/p>\n
Multiple design changes have been required since construction began in April 2024 due to underground infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Then in March 2025, unlisted NBN services were discovered underground during preparations to install the new traffic lights.<\/p>\n
The telecommunications infrastructure had to be relocated before work could continue.<\/p>\n
“Unidentified clashes with underground infrastructure, discovered after construction began, have delayed the project,” Pike said.<\/p>\n
“Ongoing negotiations and coordination with service providers have also contributed to delays, resulting in further design changes and the need for new approvals.<\/p>\n
“We’re in the process of finalising details of traffic changes during the works and will let the community know once confirmed.”<\/p>\n
Following the completion of the upgrades traffic will be able to turn left and right from Bristol Road onto the Surf Coast Highway and there will be improved pedestrian access throughout the area.<\/p>\n
Works will restart following the Easter long weekend. The project will now be completed by late 2026, ahead of the summer season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
