AFL Barwon’s new football rule changes will come into effect this weekend during round 1 of the Bellarine Football Netball\u00a0League (BFNL).<\/p>\n

The local governing body updated the league rules in January, aligning with that of the AFL.<\/p>\n

There will be four on-field changes implemented into matchplay with the aim to streamline gameplay, improve flow and enhance fairness across\u00a0the board.<\/p>\n

Key changes include:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last disposal<\/strong><\/p>\n

A free kick will now be awarded for the last disposal out of bounds between the 50-metre arcs. This replaces the current last possession rule used in local competitions.<\/p>\n

Centre ball up contests<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rucks can no longer cross the centre circle line or engage with their opponent prior to contesting the ball at centre bounces.<\/p>\n

Shrugging in the tackle<\/strong><\/p>\n

Players who shrug in a tackle will now be deemed to have had prior opportunity. This means umpires can call holding the ball more readily, interpreting the shrug as an attempt to evade or fend off\u00a0a tackler.<\/p>\n

Ruck nominations<\/strong><\/p>\n

Umpires may now restart play around the ground without waiting for ruck nominations, provided the area is clear. The move is aimed at speeding up the game and reducing stoppage time.<\/p>\n

The new changes have been rolled out by AFL Barwon across all local practice matches and match simulations.<\/p>\n

AFL Barwon have also run education seminars throughout the past few months to get clubs, players and officials up to speed with the\u00a0new changes.<\/p>\n
