The state Labor government and Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) both cite utilities issues as responsible for the delays to the long-awaited Armstrong Creek fire station and ambulance station, with the project now not to be built until 2028.<\/p>\n

FRV has also clarified the fire station would not be located on land the state government has now listed to be sold.<\/p>\n

Pledged by Labor in 2018, the Armstrong Creek fire station had $2.8 million earmarked in the 2018\u201319 state budget for an expected opening in 2021.<\/p>\n

This date was later moved to 2023<\/a> and the site was also changed from land at McCanns Road in Mount Duneed<\/a> to 350-360 Boundary Road in Armstrong Creek.<\/p>\n

Labor’s 2026\u201327 stage budget, released yesterday, lists the ambulance station with a $30 million budget and a “revised project schedule” of the second quarter of 2028\u201329.<\/p>\n

Last month, Real estate agency Gross Waddell ICR listed 5 McCanns Road Mount Duneed on behalf of the state government, with the 5,956sqm site to be sold by a public tender closing on 28 May.<\/p>\n

This week, an FRV spokesperson said the site of the future Armstrong Creek fire station<\/a> was not for sale.<\/p>\n

The spokesperson said 5 McCanns Road was an unoccupied site previously purchased by the Country Fire Authority.<\/p>\n

“FRV deemed the location of this land to be unsuitable for the delivery of fire services into the Armstrong Creek community.”<\/p>\n

Speaking yesterday at University Hospital Geelong<\/a> ahead of the budget, health minister Harriet Shing said a need had been identified for a co-located fire station and ambulance station in Armstrong Creek.<\/p>\n

“To be really clear, we haven’t seen any reduction in fire service response or facilities as a result of this announcement and the work we are undertaking for that really careful planning process that needs to be worked though.”<\/p>\n

Shing said the Boundary Road site was complex.<\/p>\n

“We do have a range of issues around ingress, egress, and also where those utilities lie, and we will continue to work alongside the community to make sure that the ambulance service, when it is delivered, is delivered in a site that is safe, accessible and fit for purpose.”<\/p>\n

The FRV spokesperson said FRV contracted to purchase the Boundary Road land for the facility but its settlement and a planning permit was “subject to services being connected to the site”.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
