{"id":186524,"date":"2026-05-08T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=186524"},"modified":"2026-05-06T15:07:27","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T05:07:27","slug":"surf-coast-community-delivers-record-86k-for-sick-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/surf-coast-community-delivers-record-86k-for-sick-kids\/","title":{"rendered":"Surf Coast community delivers record $86K for sick kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RESIDENTS in Torquay and Mt Duneed have smashed their Good Friday Appeal fundraising record, raising $86,243 for the Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteer area manager Peter McMahan praised the community effort, saying the result was driven by a broad mix of local donors, volunteers and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The 2026 record was achieved by wonderful individuals raising funds for the Good Friday Appeal, and had local businesses and organisations lifting their donations,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Torquay Lions Club and friends set the highest single amount for the region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/RossYappa29112_99534.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Torquay Lions Club president Ross Yapp said support from many groups and individuals helped raise funds for the appeal this year. Photo: supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The club coordinated fundraising from sausage sizzles and donations from local businesses to bring in $47,013 \u2013 almost $12,000 more than last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Support from so many, but including Times News Group, Bunnings Waurn Ponds, Mt Duneed Men&#8217;s Shed, LA Movement, our own local GFA ambassador Belle Strahan and mum Karen, Ride the Wave bus service, and others drove the dollars towards the new record,&#8221; Torquay Lions Club president Ross Yapp said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Members of the Mt Duneed Men&#8217;s Shed were strong supporters of the Lions Club sausage sizzles, helping regularly at Bunnings barbecues in particular.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s appeal will contribute to a further $3 million in funding to health services across regional Victoria, helping extend the hospital&#8217;s expertise beyond Melbourne through paediatric equipment, technology and training.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/BelleSf2911202_81231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Local Good Friday Appeal ambassador Belle Strahan. Photo: supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know times are tough for many, and we&#8217;re so grateful for every act of generosity,&#8221; McMahon said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We didn&#8217;t expect to raise such a high amount this year, but obviously those in a position to give realised every dollar makes a difference, creating a ripple effect of change that can make a real impact to the lives of sick kids.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A goal of the Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital is to create an integrated paediatric service system, where health services learn from each other and share expertise.<\/p>\n<p>McMahan suggested the new regional funding would be critical in strengthening local services, particularly given the distance between Parkville and communities such as Torquay, Winchelsea and Aireys Inlet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>\/\/SPONSORED CONTENT<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RESIDENTS in Torquay and Mt Duneed have smashed their Good Friday Appeal fundraising record, raising $86,243 for the Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital.
