{"id":188231,"date":"2026-06-01T13:47:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T03:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=188231"},"modified":"2026-06-01T13:49:37","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T03:49:37","slug":"police-ramp-up-patrols-across-geelong-cbd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/police-ramp-up-patrols-across-geelong-cbd\/","title":{"rendered":"Police ramp up patrols across Geelong CBD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Extra police have hit the streets of central Geelong as Victoria Police ramps up its presence in the CBD with two targeted operations focused on crime and anti-social behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>The top cop in Victoria&#8217;s west, Michael Reid, said Geelong remained a safe city, but police had heard concerns from residents and businesses who did not always feel that way.<\/p>\n<p>Operation Pulse, which has been deployed at major Melbourne shopping centres over the past six months, is now operating in Geelong alongside a dedicated CBD tasking team established last month.<\/p>\n<p>The operation will run until the end of the year, with officers patrolling Westfield Geelong, Market Square and the Moorabool Street bus interchange for periods of two to three weeks at a time.<\/p>\n<p>Using both foot and vehicle patrols, officers are tasked with deterring offending and providing a highly visible police presence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/IMG_1473_21303.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Western Region Acting Commander, Michael Reid. Photo: Victoria Police.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s safe here in Geelong, I really believe that \u2013 I live here, I work here \u2013 but if people aren&#8217;t feeling safe, I want them to feel safe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Commander Reid said the number of additional officers deployed through Operation Pulse would vary, but residents could expect to see a strong police presence throughout the CBD.<\/p>\n<p>In its first two weeks of operation, the CBD tasking team has made 14 arrests and laid 20 charges relating to offences including theft, affray, drug possession and public nuisance.<\/p>\n<p>Among those arrests were two 39-year-old women who allegedly attempted to steal more than $900 worth of goods from a Geelong clothing store.<\/p>\n<p>The team also arrested and charged four teenagers \u2013 three aged 14 and one aged 13 \u2013 following an alleged affray.<\/p>\n<p>Police said Operation Pulse teams can be moved between locations based on intelligence and emerging issues as the operation continues throughout the year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Extra police have hit the streets of central Geelong as Victoria Police ramps up its presence in the CBD with two targeted operations focused on crime and anti-social behaviour.
