For many ocean lovers, sharks are the creatures that occupy the back of the mind every time they paddle out, dive beneath the surface or head off for a swim.<\/p>\n

A World Oceans Week event in Torquay hopes to change that and encourage people to swap fear for fascination and gain a deeper understanding of the sharks and rays that share our local waters.<\/p>\n

Hosted by Ocean Grind, the event will bring together marine scientist Louisa Graf, ocean conservationist Shannon Hurley and freedive instructor James Cini for a conversation about the role sharks and rays play in local ecosystems.<\/p>\n

Aimed at surfers, open-water swimmers and anyone curious about the marine environment, the event will explore the science, stories and realities behind some of the ocean’s most misunderstood animals.<\/p>\n

Ocean Grind’s Mark Clatworthy said the conversation was about helping people see these animals differently.<\/p>\n

“We’ve always tried to raise awareness around the importance of ocean health, but we also like to draw attention to the beauty of the ocean too, including all its creatures,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks to our wonderful guest speakers, we hope to destigmatise sharks and rays and help people feel more calm out there.”<\/p>\n

The event will run from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday 11 June at Ocean Grind.<\/p>\n

Tickets cost $10, with all proceeds going to the Victorian National Parks Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ocean Grind is at 2 Sawmills Way, Torquay.<\/p>\n
