{"id":188382,"date":"2026-06-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=188382"},"modified":"2026-06-03T20:05:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T10:05:15","slug":"swans-coach-stays-grounded-despite-roaring-start-to-the-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/swans-coach-stays-grounded-despite-roaring-start-to-the-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Swans coach stays grounded despite roaring start to the season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SOUTH Barwon only have one loss to their name, but head coach Mark Neeld is not ready to make big statements yet.<\/p>\n<p>The Swans came back from an early deficit in Sunday&#8217;s Big Freeze game to secure a win over Newtown &amp; Chilwell in blustery conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Neeld said he anticipated the game being an arm wrestle and was pleased with how his side adjusted to the conditions.<\/p>\n<p>With ten goals and ten goal scorers in the 10.12 (72) to 6.13 (49) win, there was plenty to be happy about.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/NewChisVSthBarwon64_33722.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Max Mawson flies high during South Barwon&#8217;s win over Newtown &amp; Chilwell. It was a hard-fought game, an arm wrestle, all those cliches, but that&#8217;s exactly what it was,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a really hard-contested brand of footy that we played in somewhat difficult conditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Neeld said the spread of goal scorers had been particularly exciting to see.<\/p>\n<p>He said it is emblematic of the ability of his squad to play different roles not just week-to-week, but during each game.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/NewChisVSthBarwon65_33663.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Max Mawson soared for South Barwon, earning himself a goal and best on nod. Photo: Michael Chambers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The football intelligence of the side this season and players&#8217; ability to adjust their games in real time has also been a point of difference for the Swans.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding the needs of each player has made those adjustments easier.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very simple to sit there and say, &#8216;Hey, I think we&#8217;re doing this and we should do that&#8217;, but that&#8217;s the simple bit,&#8221; Neeld said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The next bit is to work with the players to help them understand it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/NewChisVSthBarwon46_33664.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sam James celebrates kicking South Barwon&#8217;s first goal of the game. Photo: Michael Chambers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We all learn in different ways, so players will need those messages delivered in different formats and then it&#8217;s working with them over time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s no quick fix but we think at the moment we&#8217;ve got a reasonable blend of some players that have played together for three or four years, and we&#8217;ve got a few young kids that have come into the site too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite sitting third on the ladder \u2013 on percentage \u2013 with a 6\u20131 record, Neeld still believes his side has more to give.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/NewChisVSthBarwon34_33651.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Calling it a &#8220;work in progress&#8221;, he is reluctant to read too much into the standings just yet, especially with the Swans set to face their toughest test of the season against the undefeated St Mary&#8217;s in round 9.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I still like to make sure everybody&#8217;s played everyone before making any statements about where we sit or other teams sit,&#8221; Neeld said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Newtown and St Mary&#8217;s, they&#8217;ve hit the ground running.
