When Nina Morrison and Becky Webster first walked through the doors of the Geelong Football Club in 2019, there was no women’s history for them to reflect on.<\/p>\n
Drafted at picks one and seven respectively ahead of the Cats\u2019 inaugural season, they stared down careers on a blank page.<\/p>\n
Eight seasons later, they have become two of the club\u2019s defining figures and, most recently, its 2026 co-captains.<\/p>\n
For Morrison and Webster, the shared appointment feels fitting after spending their AFLW journeys side by side.<\/p>\n
Webster said having Morrison alongside her eased the burden of leadership, knowing the captaincy does not sit solely on her shoulders.<\/p>\n
Confident their different strengths will complement one another, she said there was no one she would rather share the role with.<\/p>\n
\u201cNina\u2019s just a f***ing work horse,\u201d Webster said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019ve seen that throughout her young days as well; she really brings that standard of physicality on the track and her wisdom around what the game is going to bring has been really great for the group.\u201d<\/p>\n
Morrison, meanwhile, said Webster brought plenty of energy to the role, including the all important \u201cvibes\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201c[Becky] is a bit louder than I am,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can be a bit head down, bum up sometimes and then Becky gets the vibes going and brings everyone along with that.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think we should complement each other well.\u201d<\/p>\n
After learning of their appointments alongside the playing group last week, Webster said she had taken time to reflect on her journey at the club.<\/p>\n
Now among Geelong\u2019s most experienced AFLW players, she said it still felt like yesterday that she and Morrison arrived together.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe just want what\u2019s best for the group but also this footy club,\u201d Webster said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been so privileged to walk into these four walls and feel like home. [I want] to share that amongst the group as well and to continue being unmistakably Geelong.\u201d<\/p>\n
A lifelong Cats supporter, Morrison said it was surreal to walk the halls of the club as both a player and leader.<\/p>\n
The significance hits hardest when the stands are empty and the crowds have gone home.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s crazy that you can walk through here, not just on training days, but randomly on a weekend or a time when no one else is really here and it\u2019s a place that I just get to walk through,\u201d Morrison said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s really cool to think that I\u2019ve grown up here. A lot of my leadership has obviously developed here as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully we can continue to evolve in that sense and create something special.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Geelong Cats will open their season against reigning premiers North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium in a double header alongside the clubs\u2019 men\u2019s teams. The date of the clash is still to be announced.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
