WINTER weather finally made its presence felt across the region, with rain washing out some competitions but plenty of strong scoring still emerging at The Sands and Torquay.<\/p>\n
At The Sands, Seb Leahy (16) opened the week by winning Monday 1 June’s medley stableford with 40 points, while Tuesday’s nine-hole event was decided on countback, with Ed Banko (7) edging Peter Cox (7) after both finished on 13 points.<\/p>\n
Wednesday’s stableford produced the best overall scoring of the week. Glenn Hardman (15) posted 39 points to win B-grade, while Fletcher Mackay (9) and Terry Brown (24) claimed A and C-grade honours.<\/p>\n
Thursday’s women’s competition was washed out, but conditions improved for Friday’s stableford, where Jason Gray (13) won A-grade with 40 points.<\/p>\n
Saturday’s monthly medal delivered some excellent rounds.<\/p>\n
Ian Davis (24) recorded the best score of the day, a nett 68 to win C-grade, while Steve Finnigan (16) and Mike Fleming (7) took out B and A-grades. Di Cox (25) won the women’s monthly medal with 75.<\/p>\n
Sunday’s stableford closed the week with Eamon O’Brien (19) posting 41 points and Grant Martyr (22) recording 40, while Byron Brightman (3) edged A-grade on countback.<\/p>\n
At Torquay, Jacqueline McDonald (11) claimed overall nett honours in Monday’s women’s challenge bowl with 39 points, while the team event went to Barwon Heads representatives Judy Fitzgerald, Hilary Neerhut and McDonald.<\/p>\n
Tuesday’s women’s monthly medal saw Helen Mayne (42) prevail on countback with 74, while Chris Flowers (35) won the resort stableford with 38 points.<\/p>\n
Dominic Condon (15) claimed Wednesday’s men’s monthly medal on countback after a round of 75, edging Murray Bingham (4), who also recorded an eagle.<\/p>\n
Tony Jones (14) and John Corcoran (20) were the stableford grade winners.<\/p>\n
Like several courses across the region, Torquay lost Thursday’s competition to wet weather.<\/p>\n
Play resumed on Friday with Anthony McKenzie (13) and Michael McKinnon (17) both posting 39 points to win their grades. Jarrah McDiarmid added an eagle on the opening hole, while Di Schultz (39) led the women’s field.<\/p>\n
Saturday delivered some of the week’s strongest scores. Richard Pekin (13) posted 42 points to win B-grade, while Brad Thompson (10) and Di Barker (24) led the men’s and women’s competitions.<\/p>\n
Eagles were recorded by Jack Davis and Adon Cations.<\/p>\n
The standout performance of the week came on Sunday when Scott Williams (12) amassed 46 points to comfortably win A-grade stableford.<\/p>\n
Scott Vale (24) won B-grade with 40 points, Lindsay West (22) topped the women’s event with 41, and Geordie Daulaca capped the day with an eagle on the 1st hole.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
