Geelong is mourning the loss of basketball stalwart and community leader Rod Bush, who passed away on Saturday.<\/p>\n
A respected referee, administrator and mentor, Bush dedicated more than six decades to basketball and played a key role in developing officials and pathways across Geelong and Victoria.<\/p>\n
Only last week, Bush was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours List for his service to basketball and the community.<\/p>\n
Bush was also recently honoured with Basketball Victoria’s 60 Years of Service Award.<\/p>\n
Reflecting on his long involvement in the sport last month, he said mentoring young people had been among the most rewarding aspects of his career.<\/p>\n
\u201cI enjoyed working with young people and watching them grow,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI enjoyed the challenge of working in higher leagues and I enjoy working with those with leadership roles in the sport. They are very dedicated, very competent and supportive.\u201d<\/p>\n
But Rod’s dedication to the community extended far beyond the basketball court.<\/p>\n
A proud Rotarian, he was honoured as a Paul Harris Fellow with two Sapphires in recognition of his exceptional commitment to service.<\/p>\n
He also served as board membership director, received the John Fox Award for club servicing, and made a significant impact a chair of the Geelong Pastoral Healthcare Network.<\/p>\n
Bush was also a life member of Geelong United Basketball, which paid tribute to his legacy in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Rod Bush,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n
\u201cA true pillar of the basketball community, Rod\u2019s lifelong dedication to the game was extraordinary.<\/p>\n
\u201cRod will be remembered not only for his remarkable contributions, but for his passion, generosity and unwavering commitment to others.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Basketball Victoria also paid tribute to Bush’s contribution to the sport.<\/p>\n
\u201cAcross more than sixty years, Rod’s impact on Victorian basketball is immeasurable,\u201d the organisation said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe lifted standards, created pathways, developed officials, strengthened regional communities and inspired generations of volunteers and technical officials.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis leadership, expertise and tireless dedication, built foundations that will continue to serve the sport for years to come.<\/p>\n
