THERE’S a buzz building on the Surf Coast ahead of the annual Anglesea Trail Running Race this Sunday in Anglesea, part of Victoria’s premier Trail Running Series.<\/p>\n

Over 1,000 trail runners are expected to hit the trails over four course distances: the challenging 28km course, a 15km, 8km or Friendly 4km run. Entries are open online right up until race morning.<\/p>\n

Organised by Torquay-based event company Rapid Ascent, the event offers something for everyone, from seasoned trail runners chasing a challenge to local families keen to enjoy a morning outdoors together.<\/p>\n

Anglesea’s location on the Great Ocean Road provides the perfect backdrop for exploring the surrounding trail network.<\/p>\n

Commencing on the white sand of Anglesea Main Beach, the courses explore a range of coastal bushland, clifftop trails and sandy beaches in an undulating landscape.<\/p>\n

Event director Sam Maffett said one of the event’s greatest strengths was its welcoming atmosphere.<\/p>\n

“We are lucky enough to call these magnificent coastal trails home, and we can’t wait to see runners of all ages and abilities experience them on race day,” Maffett said.<\/p>\n

“By providing a welcoming environment, food, coffee and family activities and showcasing little-known trails, we’ve pulled together all the good bits that make trail running incredibly rewarding.”<\/p>\n

The family-friendly nature of the event is already attracting plenty of local participation.<\/p>\n

Kat Francis and her son Lucien will tackle the 8km course together, while Torquay father-and-daughter pair Martin and Mika Steyne have signed up for the Friendly 4km.<\/p>\n

“I am running the series with my son as his intro to hopefully a life-time love of trail running,” Kat said.<\/p>\n

Unique to the Anglesea event, the Friendly 4km course is designed specifically for families, children, first-timers and community members looking to experience trail running in a relaxed and supportive environment.<\/p>\n

Visitors to the area might like to explore other activities after their run such as exploring the local rock pools, visiting the Anglesea Golf Club for kangaroo spotting, hire a paddle boat or canoe on the Anglesea River, or sample delicious local cuisine at a number of nearby cafes and restaurants.<\/p>\n

The Surf Coast Shire is a proud supporter of the Anglesea Trail Running Series through their event grants program.<\/p>\n

“The event aligns perfectly with the Surf Coast being an ECO Destination, as a place that offers high-quality nature-based tourism experiences,” mayor Libby Stapleton said.<\/p>\n

“Numerous competitors will support the local economy with an overnight stay. We look forward to welcoming everyone.”<\/p>\n

The 2026 race schedule includes the following scenic locations: Blackwood, held back in late May, Anglesea on 5 July, and Silvan on 2 August with the popular handicap format.<\/p>\n

Entries remain open online until race morning.<\/p>\n
