{"id":190587,"date":"2026-07-07T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=190587"},"modified":"2026-07-02T11:43:28","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T01:43:28","slug":"meet-the-moolap-man-handcrafting-cigar-box-guitars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/meet-the-moolap-man-handcrafting-cigar-box-guitars\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the Moolap man handcrafting cigar box guitars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AFTER decades crafting furniture, Moolap&#8217;s Greg McKinnon has turned his woodworking skills to a different kind of instrument: handcrafted cigar box guitars.<\/p>\n<p>Under the name Brookwood Cigar Box Guitars, the retired furniture maker has spent the past decade building one-of-a-kind instruments from reclaimed timber, combining a lifelong love of wood with a passion for music.<\/p>\n<p>McKinnon said he had played guitar since he was 18, but it wasn&#8217;t until years later that he discovered cigar box guitars online.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/IMG_4199_45088_tn_w600-1.jpg\" alt=\"A special guitar painted by Allan Boromeo in Moolap and is inspired by McKinnon's travels to Echuca and the Murray River.\" width=\"600\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A special guitar painted by Allan Boromeo in Moolap and is inspired by McKinnon&#8217;s travels to Echuca and the Murray River.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t push the musical envelope too far after that,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I was just happy to be knocking around home on my six-string acoustic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Years later, I saw a few videos online and the three-string revolution really captured me. I picked up a cigar box guitar and it&#8217;s now my new passion. I just love it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The cigar boxes I&#8217;ve found are often decorative and quite attractive in themselves, however, I&#8217;ve opted to craft my own when I can. It gives me my own level of freedom.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Working from a shed on his Moolap property, McKinnon crafts guitars that are as much works of art as they are musical instruments.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There ain&#8217;t no rules for cigar box guitars, and that&#8217;s why I have never made the same guitar,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They are always different and personalised in their own unique way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For me it&#8217;s a blank canvas awaiting the artist.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve just fallen under the cigar box guitar spell. Photo: Nathan Rivalland.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Many of McKinnon&#8217;s guitars are built from reclaimed Australian timbers, including mountain ash and blackwood sourced from the Otways.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The timbers I&#8217;ve got in the garage are gorgeous, and no piece is ever the same,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We leave the natural edges on them always. This gives it unique character.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While some buyers treat the guitars as pieces of art, others discover just how accessible they are to play.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d say 15 to 20 per cent of buyers just hang them on the wall,&#8221; McKinnon said. &#8220;But many others learn the three strings and really get into playing.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/1473b994-6c44-429b-9_47536_tn_w600-1.jpg\" alt=\"McKinnon has been working with timber since he was a young boy. Photo: Nathan Rivalland.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For beginners, the appeal lies in the instrument&#8217;s simplicity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re incredibly user-friendly and serve as a great gateway to the guitar.<\/p>\n<p>Often sporting his trademark Akubra hat, McKinnon can regularly be found at markets and music festivals across Victoria and interstate, sharing his handcrafted guitars with fellow musicians and curious passers-by.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are a few makers around, but I&#8217;d say I&#8217;m the most serious one in our area,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/1aaf630a-3575-448c-b_47527_tn_w600-1.jpg\" alt=\"McKinnon's Brookwood Steampunk Guitars are inspired by 19th century industrial steam-powered machinery. I just love being around musically minded people.
