WHILE mass crowds gathered at the racing track for Geelong Cup Day, children arrived in droves to the tracks at Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railway for free rides.<\/p>\n
Families boarded the miniature trains and took advantage of the free service made possible by the City of Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe day was sponsored by the COGG and was in connection with the celebration of Children\u2019s Week activities throughout the region,\u201d railway secretary Brian Coleman said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany families who came had a great day out at our mini railway and our wonderful volunteer members were only too happy to make it the successful event that it was.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railway is Geelong\u2019s only passenger carrying miniature railway located on eight hectares of beautiful picturesque parkland on the foreshore at Portarlington.<\/p>\n
Revenue derived from train operations is either ploughed back into the railway for its maintenance and further expansion or donated to worthwhile charities from time to time.<\/p>\n
Mr Coleman said the railway continues to have a bright future and has \u201cmany plans in the melting pot\u201d to ensure the railway\u2019s future success.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe railway is looking for new volunteers to help run this unique railway \u2013 so come on down, join our happy band and get yourself involved.\u201d<\/p>\n
