Some of it was spent over 200km away! So much for a Geelong City Deal!

I think we can all judge what was delivered and what wasn’t, but the fact remains that if we want strong electoral commitments and our share of the budget dollars, we need much tighter margins, no matter who wins the overall election.

Geelong is in desperate need of our share, and that requires both parties to start making some significant promises for Geelong itself.

As constituents, we should forget party loyalty and vote to put our town at the top of the priority list.

So here is my top three wish list for both parties to consider this election:

No. 1 – The compulsory acquisition of Market Square and implementation of the Green Heart Project, as proposed by the Committee for Geelong and supported by the Chamber of Commerce and Geelong council. This was also strongly supported by a local survey.

No. 2 – The rezoning of the CBD into a Special Economic Zone to promote investment and jobs.

No. 3 – The delivery of a fully funded integrated transport system that includes a full rethink of the bus and train network to include new suburbs like Fyansford, Bannockburn and Armstrong Creek, as well as built-in capacity for further expansion as new urban areas open up.

What are your priorities?

Let’s put all incumbent and hopeful MPs on notice.

We, Geelong, are done with seeing you stand quietly behind state leaders and nodding. We want you to work for our city and our vote.

I really don’t care about the colour of your tie or scarf, we want genuine commitments to the projects that will finally fix the Geelong CBD and broader region issues.

Make no mistake, at the November election, we must vote with our feet to get our fair share. Five per cent of $4.44 billion is about $220 million. That should cover it.

GARETH KENT

Director, Preston Rowe Paterson

//SPONSORED CONTENT

I was interested to hear that the Liberal Party nominated some strong candidates for the Geelong region in the last week ahead of the November state election: Andy Pobjoy (of Piano Bar fame) for the Geelong seat and Libby Pettit (fashion designer) for the South Barwon seat.
