{"id":191695,"date":"2026-07-17T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=191695"},"modified":"2026-07-15T20:05:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T10:05:14","slug":"the-deadpan-comic-winning-over-australian-audiences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/living\/the-deadpan-comic-winning-over-australian-audiences\/","title":{"rendered":"The deadpan comic winning over Australian audiences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>GEELONG audiences are in for a stellar night of comedy as award-winning Kiwi comic Ray O\u2019Leary brings his <\/strong><strong>trademark deadpan delivery, slow-burn punchlines and signature grey suit to Geelong Arts Centre.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After earning critical acclaim across the Australia in recent months, the comedian&#8217;s I Can See O\u2019Leary Now the Ray Has Gone tour arrives in Geelong on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>A familiar face on Australian television, O&#8217;Leary regularly appears on Channel 10&#8217;s Have You Been Paying Attention?, Thank God You&#8217;re Here and CheapSeats, as well as SBS&#8217;s Patriot Brains.<\/p>\n<p>The Kiwi larrakin leans into his academic appearance with glasses, a grey suit and monotone delivery before disarming audiences with his jokes.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Leary has shared the stage with the Flight of the Conchords and Rhys Darby and recently appeared on season four of Taskmaster New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>Having travelled to Geelong three times before, he regards the region as a \u201cNew Zealand metropolis\u201d and the country&#8217;s equivalent of the &#8220;big smoke&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always enjoy performing there in Geelong. They\u2019re a wonderful crowd and it\u2019s always good to get up there, or down there, or left or right, whatever way it is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeelong always cops it fair whack from Melburnians, but if it was a city in New Zealand it would be the big smoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe guys are in for a treat. They will get the best of the show because it\u2019s been all over the country already. It\u2019s perfected and ready to go for Geelong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the audience could expect a polished show built around his trademark deadpan style and observations about the mundane parts of everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I express any kind of energy on stage, I\u2019d highly recommend the audience get in touch with some doctors because I\u2019ve obviously taken something. There shouldn\u2019t even be an inch of excitement,&#8221; O&#8217;Leary said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always just had that style. I would act and emote if I could, but I just can\u2019t.
