MORE than 70 local surf lifesavers are hitting the water this week in northern New South Wales for the 2026 Australian and Interstate Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Championships.<\/p>\n
Crews from Barwon Heads 13th Beach, Ocean Grove and Anglesea are racing across multiple disciplines in South West Rocks.<\/p>\n
First-time national competitor Clem Chettle is fresh off earning her bronze medallion in surf rescue and will be one to watch.<\/p>\n
Ocean Grove is sending 26 athletes to the event, all of whom are active patrol members providing emergency lifesaving services throughout the year.<\/p>\n
President Lyndie Freestone said IRB racing hones and maintains surf lifesavers’ skills, ensuring they are rescue-ready whenever they are needed.<\/p>\n
“After a highly successful Victorian season, finishing second overall in the State, our 30-strong IRB racing team \u2013 all highly skilled patrollers \u2013 is heading north to compete against the best in the country at the 2026 IRB Aussies,” Freestone said.<\/p>\n
“We wish them all the best. Go Grove.”<\/p>\n
Anglesea is sending a small but mighty team of 10 competitors to the national event.<\/p>\n
President David Marsh said the club continued to punch above its weight against the nation’s best.<\/p>\n
“We’re incredibly proud of our IRB team and everything they’ve achieved this season,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Their commitment, skill and teamwork reflect the very best of Anglesea SLSC. We will be cheering them on with pride.”<\/p>\n
For Barwon Heads 13th Beach, the championships will involve the most members the club has ever had represent it at a national event.<\/p>\n
Club leader Jake Pownall is gearing up to lead his team and secure its first national title in decades.<\/p>\n
“Three years ago, we had a team of 16 people, and we were lucky to make a relay team. Three seasons later, we won the Victorian title for the under-23 division,” he said.<\/p>\n
“We hope to finish in the top three this year. We think that’s a reachable goal. A win in the next few years is what we are working towards.”<\/p>\n
Life Saving Victoria general manager of member engagement and sport Simon Rickard said it was terrific to have such a strong contingent of competitors heading to the IRB Championships.<\/p>\n
“Lifesaving sport keeps our volunteer lifesavers fit and their skills sharp, so they can be rescue-ready to keep our community safe in the water,” he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
