PETE Helliar is heading back to one of his favourite childhood holiday spots, swapping Melbourne stages for the Torquay Bowls Club as he celebrates 30 years in comedy.<\/p>\n
The comedian, actor and television personality will perform a one-night-only show on 6 August, promising a mix of old favourites and fresh material.<\/p>\n
Helliar said the show would be less about sticking to a script and more about seeing where the night takes him.<\/p>\n
“I’ve done a few tours recently which have shed light on the jokes I’ve made over the years, and it’s been great to reflect on the state of comedy from my point of view,” he said.<\/p>\n
“The Torquay show will be more of a hodgepodge of older and newer material. I’ll decide on the day what I’ll talk about but they are fun shows to do.”<\/p>\n
Helliar first emerged on Melbourne’s comedy circuit in the mid-1990s before becoming a household name through Rove, Before the Game and The Project.<\/p>\n
He has also appeared on Taskmaster, Have You Been Paying Attention? and I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, and received a Gold Logie nomination in 2017.<\/p>\n
While Helliar has performed across the country, Torquay has long held a special place in his heart after spending childhood summers on the Surf Coast.<\/p>\n
“I love it down there,” Helliar said. “I haven’t actually been to the bowls club before, but I love that comedy events are popping up at these sorts of venues.<\/p>\n
“To have local management backing live comedy is brilliant to see. Torquay is a fantastic place, and it’s going to be great to open it up to the community in this way.”<\/p>\n
Helliar will be joined by fellow comedians Nathan Chin and Sonia Di Oro.<\/p>\n
