THE Surf Coast Longboarders Club will rally behind a local family at this year’s Winter Classic, with organisers hoping to eclipse the event’s previous fundraising efforts.<\/p>\n

This year’s event will support local mother Alex Mackenzie and her two young children following the death of her husband Sean Andrews this year.<\/p>\n

Andrews was a much-loved member of the local surfing community who worked at Patagonia’s Torquay headquarters.<\/p>\n

Proceeds from event entries, raffle prizes and the charity auction will go directly to the family.<\/p>\n

Surf Coast Longboarders president Penny Andrews said the club selected a different beneficiary each year, but supporting the Mackenzie-Andrews family was an easy decision.<\/p>\n

“Sean was a big part of the surf scene and many of our club members were good mates with him,” Andrews said.<\/p>\n

“Ali was pregnant with her second child when Sean passed; absolutely tragic. Any funds raised will go a long way in helping them out.”<\/p>\n

More than 40 local businesses have donated prizes for the charity auction, which will be held at the Torquay Angling Club on 8 August.<\/p>\n

The Winter Classic surfing competition will be held at Point Impossible on 8 and 9 August.<\/p>\n
