{"id":19487,"date":"2018-11-14T13:37:14","date_gmt":"2018-11-14T02:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=19487"},"modified":"2018-11-22T12:45:47","modified_gmt":"2018-11-22T01:45:47","slug":"a-unique-medium-comes-to-the-surf-coast-art-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/a-unique-medium-comes-to-the-surf-coast-art-space\/","title":{"rendered":"A unique medium comes to the Surf Coast Art Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An exhibition titled <em>Staging Clay: ceramic vessels and objects <\/em>will showcase works by 18 artists from the Surf Coast, Bellarine and the Otways until\u00a0 November 25 at the Surf Coast Art Space.<\/p>\n<p>With artists including Pattie Beerens, Daniella Zimmerman, Dani Salvo, Fiona McDonald and Melinda Solly featured in the exhibition, the exhibition\u2019s curator Sally Groom said she was excited by the range of ceramics talent on show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStaging Clay will offer a clear example of the blurring of boundaries between art and craft, which has been happening since the 1960s,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCeramics have become a ubiquitous medium in contemporary art, with the technically focused craft tradition a parallel stream, sometimes merging with, sometimes diverging from the art world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Artists displaying their work range from the self-taught to graduates of TAFEs, RMIT University and the VCA (Victorian College of the Arts).<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition will play host to a variety of art forms, including sculptural installations and wall pieces, and is comprised of a diverse range of ceramics, from tableware to sculpture, and a number of paintings and weavings.<\/p>\n<p>Sentiment is deeply explored throughout the exhibition, particularly in artist Karen Steenbergen\u2019s project<em> Milkshed, <\/em>a series of tableware in tribute to Australia\u2019s dairy farmers who continue to face extreme financial hardship as a result of drought.<\/p>\n<p>November 25 is the final day for <em>Staging Clay: ceramic vessels and objects<\/em>. The exhibition will be open from 10am till 2.30pm on the 25<sup>th<\/sup>.
