THE Surf Coast Shire will not create a pedestrian crossing with lights at the top shops at Aireys Inlet despite a public petition to do so, saying the crossing would be on the Great Ocean Road and thus be outside its responsibility.<\/p>\n
The shire received a petition with 177 signatures at its October 23 meeting, with petitioners saying they needed to cross the Great Ocean Road to get access to the general store, post office and other businesses on a daily basis, and patients attending the medical centre needed to cross to the pharmacy.<\/p>\n
The council formally responded to the petition at its November 27 meeting.<\/p>\n
In their report to councillors, officers said the Great Ocean Road was managed by Regional Roads Victoria (RRV), so \u201cany safety measures identified to improve this location will require their involvement and approval\u201d and that RRV should take the lead.<\/p>\n
\u201cCouncil officers have contacted RRV regarding this petition and they have indicated they have received the same petition. It is also currently being investigated by road safety officers in their department.\u201d<\/p>\n
Councillors resolved to accept the officers\u2019 recommendation to continue to liaise and work with RRV on reviewing the safety at this location to determine if a pedestrian crossing or other safety measures are required.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
