When the Geelong Post Office bell rang on November 11 1918, sighs of relief could be heard louder than its chime. It marked the end of the Great War, and now 100 years on, an exclusive exhibition has been curated in tribute to the peace celebrations that followed in the Geelong and Barwon region.<\/p>\n
With funding from the Department of Veterans\u2019 Affairs Armistice Centenary Grants Program, the Geelong Heritage Centre has opened a touring exhibition to recognise the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice which saw the conclusion of World War I.<\/p>\n
The approved application \u2013 which was backed by Richard Marles MP \u2013 has allowed the exhibition Remembering the
\nEnd to breathe localised sentiment into the gallery space.<\/p>\n
The Geelong Heritage Centre will play host to the exhibition until early February 2019 where it will then tour to library branches across the Geelong Regional Libraries network throughout 2019.<\/p>\n
Full of local stories and photographs, Remembering the End focuses on eight themes: Armistice 1918, Peace Celebrations 1919, Welcome Home, Memorials, Starting Again, Supporting Returned Soldiers, Absence and Grief, and The Spanish Flu.<\/p>\n
Images in the exhibition were founded from the Geelong Heritage Centre archive as well as the Australian War Memorial collection.<\/p>\n
