Now I know a lot of people are looking forward to enjoying their holidays, and the chance to kick back and enjoy some really good fishing.

For those who have access to a boat, the ocean is producing some good fish with some reports of snapper, gummy sharks and many other species being caught.

Though the weather has been lousy over the past week or so, the forecast is on the improve.

For those who fish from the rocks and beaches, there are some pinkies being caught, salmon as well as the occasional, whiting are also being taken.

Squid are also around. They are being taken both from piers, off the rocks and by those out in boats.

Our inland waterways are also producing some good fishing with stocked waterways seeing some good trout fishing, while other waterways are producing some nice redfin, so enjoy your opportunities.

MEANWHILE, two Melbourne-based men have been convicted and fined $2,000 each, plus costs, after being caught with 60kg of pipis in Victoria’s far west.

The fines were handed down in Portland Magistrates Court earlier this month where the men were each found guilty of
taking fish for sale and using commercial fishing equipment without authority.

Portland Fisheries Officers intercepted the men at Swan Lake, near Discovery Bay, in March of this year.

They were driving an all-terrain vehicle, dressed in wetsuits and were in possession of their illegal catch along with fishing nets.

At the time, they claimed they were fishing for a commercial fisher, however, this was later formally denied.

Fisheries Officers seized the pipis, nets and vehicle on the spot.

Victorian Fisheries Authority Director of Enforcement and Education Ian Parks reminded all recreational pipi fishers to stick to the rules.

“Anyone wanting to fish for pipis must be appropriately licensed and keep to the catch limit of five litres per person per day.

“These rules are in place to ensure our valuable fisheries remain sustainable.”

So, remember over these holidays, do the right thing. Take your opportunities to get out there and have a fish when you can.

You never know what your next big catch may be.

So, from myself to all those who read and support My Big Catch, I look forward to a bigger and better year next year with you and the Times News Group.

Thank you all for your support and responses.

Have a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year and take care.

Remember, your next big catch may be just around the next corner.

Meanwhile, if you see or suspect illegal fishing activity any time over summer please phone the 24-hour reporting line 13 FISH (13 34 74).

PHOTOS

I would also like to remind everyone to keep those photos coming in of your big catch!
