NEARLY 700 people ran for a good cause on Fairhaven beach earlier this month in the eighth staging of the Tim Gates Classic.<\/p>\n
The annual event organised by the Fairhaven SLSC is a five-kilometre walk or run and a 10-kilometre run from the clubhouse, along the beach and back.<\/p>\n
In the 5km run\/walk, which had 615 competitors, Will Lewis was the first runner back in a time of 16:30, followed by Heath Mitchell and Barry Carey.<\/p>\n
The fastest female was Samantha Gates with a time of 20:52, followed by Mia Kemp and Lilly Taylor.<\/p>\n
In the 10km run, which had 87 competitors, Michael Kernahan was the first runner back in a time of 32:41, followed by Andre La Gerche and Andrew Monk. Johanna Waller was the first of the female runners with a time of 41:01, followed by Mikhalia Harris and Christine Hopkins.<\/p>\n
The community event raises funds for the Tim Gates Foundation, which was established in memory of Fairhaven SLSC member Tim Gates.<\/p>\n
\u201cGatesy\u201d touched the lives of many people through his dedication to surf lifesaving and the Club. In 2008, Gates died in a surfing accident at Fairhaven beach.<\/p>\n
