PREPARATION works to build a new two-lane \u201cturbo\u201d roundabout at Torquay\u2019s Surf Coast Highway and South Beach Road intersection are under way, with works continuing throughout summer.<\/p>\n
The first of its kind to be built on Victorian roads, the intersection will be fitted with physical lane separators and raised kerbs to separate vehicles upon arriving to the roundabout.<\/p>\n
Minister for Roads and Safety Luke Donnellan said the upgrade will reduce the speed of drivers approaching the intersection while also preventing motorists from changing lanes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis roundabout is designed to make this notorious site safer for everyone travelling between Geelong, Armstrong Creek and Torquay,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know how dangerous this intersection is and that\u2019s why we\u2019re not wasting a minute making the Surf Coast Highway safer for everyone who relies on it every day.\u201d<\/p>\n
Infamous for its traffic incidents \u2013 most involving drivers turning right from South Beach Road onto the highway or turning right from the highway into South Beach Road \u2013 one person has lost their life in a collision at the intersection.<\/p>\n
The upgrade will include dedicated bike lines, with the addition of bicycle hook turn bays for cyclists.<\/p>\n
Regional Roads Victoria\u2019s Regional Director (South West) Mark Koliba said the country roads body will keep the community up to date as the project progresses.<\/p>\n
\u201cService relocation works are continuing this summer in preparation for the Surf Coast Highway and South Beach Road intersection upgrade,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Power and telecommunications service are being moved further underground and away from the work zone during construction.<\/p>\n
The roundabout is receiving $2.5 million worth of funding from the Transport Accident Commission and $800,000 from the Surf Coast Shire.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
