PEDESTRIANS and cyclists will soon enjoy safer off-road access between Torquay and Torquay North via a new bridge across Deep Creek, adjacent to the Surf Coast Highway.<\/p>\n
Construction began earlier this week. The area will be off-limits until the works are completed.<\/p>\n
This includes the existing informal crossing point, which until now has provided the only connection between pathways either side of Deep Creek.<\/p>\n
\u201cA key objective of our Council Plan involves ensuring infrastructure is in place to support our community and provide for growth,\u201d Torquay ward councillor David Bell said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe need for a crossing at the western end of Deep Creek was first identified in the Deep Creek Nature Reserve master plan, which council adopted in 2003.<\/p>\n
\u201cSince then, development in Torquay North has accelerated the need for a better, safer crossing point at this location, especially given the narrow dirt track that currently serves this purpose.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen open, the new bridge will improve access, safety and travel to and from the area\u2019s vital community, recreational, educational and residential precincts.\u201d<\/p>\n
The project, including work on about 500 metres of adjoining pathways, will cost about $400,000.<\/p>\n
During construction, onsite signs, social media posts and website updates will keep community members informed of the project\u2019s progress, including access changes.<\/p>\n
