THE word \u201chope\u201d is at the forefront of four Torquay schools preparing for the opening ceremony of the Surf Coast Relay for Life next month, with the letters to spell the word donated by the Torquay Men\u2019s Shed in support of the ongoing fight against cancer.<\/p>\n
Scheduled for Polwarth Oval, North Torquay on Friday March 15, Surf Coast Relay for Life chairman Bob Tyler said the initiative gives art students the opportunity to colourfully illustrate each letter in time for the opening ceremony.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Men\u2019s Shed hand-crafted the four letters, and we look forward to this year\u2019s opening ceremony when the finished HOPE artworks will be displayed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHOPE is something Relay for Life around the world promotes each year in its annual events raising funds for the Victorian Cancer Council.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Tyler said teams of walkers have already registered and organised fundraising activities before the final walk on March 15-16 at Polwarth Oval.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe expect to have many more teams registered before the event,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis will give Torquay another great chance to raise several thousand dollars for a most worthwhile cause in which our community can take part.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am confident we will see active involvement from our community, clubs, organisations and local businesses to enter teams in the Relay or even decide to help with sponsorships and gifts in kind to help with our auction on the day.\u201d<\/p>\n
