THE City of Greater Geelong is seeking feedback about the $19 million Geelong Waterfront Safe Harbour Precinct (GWSHP), releasing a draft masterplan for public comment.<\/p>\n
The draft masterplan will go on public exhibition until April 5, before the council considers giving final endorsement.<\/p>\n
The further consultation period is being undertaken to give all members of the community an opportunity to have their say on the project.<\/p>\n
The council says it is aiming to ensure that the development provides an improvement of the public experience, is safe and provides a positive contribution to the environment and surrounding waterfront character.<\/p>\n
The $19.1 million stage one of the project includes $3 million in funding from the city, $3 million from the Royal Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC), $7.6 million from the state government and $5.5 million from the federal government.<\/p>\n
It will include a 400m public accessible wave attenuator, RGYC marina berths, maritime and education centre (former Sailing School and off the Beach Club House) and improvements to public spaces along the waterfront.<\/p>\n
Opening up the waterfront and developing new public facilities aims to provide opportunities to expand existing successful major events such as the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Race, the Festival of Sails and the Geelong Revival Motor Festival.<\/p>\n
Subject to approvals, construction of the wave attenuator is planned to begin this year. Major on-land building works will take place in 2020.<\/p>\n
“This project is a priority for council as it will increase the appeal of our waterfront as a visitor destination, attracting more people to our city,” Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood said.<\/p>\n
“It\u2019s a huge opportunity to build our reputation as a clever and creative UNESCO City of Design, by creating a precinct that gives tourists and our community the best possible experience.<\/p>\n
