YEAR 10 Surf Coast Secondary College student Maya Supple is combining a family tradition with a school project, collecting and delivering Easter eggs to sick kids in hospital.<\/p>\n
Ms Supple said year 10 students – as part of a \u2018give back\u2019 project \u2013 give back to the community via their school who had happily come on board to help.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy family has been collecting eggs since I was in primary school to give kids on the children\u2019s ward at University Geelong Hospital. For the past five years, we\u2019ve asked the community to donate via social media and online,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019ve always been so generous and this year I asked the school to be involved and they\u2019ve been so supportive, accepting donations at the administration office.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Supple said her family collects donations for two months prior to Easter and would finish up early April before they surprise the kids with their eggs.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was a very sickly child growing up and was in and out of hospital quite a lot, I know when you\u2019re in hospital something like this can really brighten your day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhether it\u2019s a magazine or a chocolate egg, it really makes a difference. We met one little boy one year who was so excited, it made me feel really, really happy. His reaction to the eggs was so rewarding.\u201d<\/p>\n
Maya said last year their bounty was well and truly in the hundreds and was hoping to replicate similar numbers this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cLast year we collected around 400 eggs which was awesome. Anyone can come and drop eggs off to the school\u2019s administration office, there\u2019s a big tub and poster.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just want to thank everyone whose donated and everyone who is thinking of donating. The nurses pay for the eggs themselves out of their own pocket, they don\u2019t get any funding so we just really wanted to help them out.\u201d<\/p>\n
