THE Barwon Region Alliance for Community Energy (BRACE) has welcomed a commitment of up to $10 million from Labor to support and encourage the take-up of renewable energy across the Geelong region.<\/p>\n
Last week, Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Labor candidate for Corangamite Libby Coker announced the Corangamite electorate would be the home of one of 10 Community Power Hubs to support the development, co-ordination and financing of local renewables projects.<\/p>\n
BRACE – a network of community energy groups, including 100% Clean Bellarine; Anglesea Community Energy; Barwon Sustainable Energy Alliance; Colac Otway Sustainability Group; Geelong Sustainability; Southern Otways Sustainable; and Surf Coast Energy Group – said the Community Power Hubs were a welcome step towards reducing the cost of living for families in the region.<\/p>\n
“Renewable energy is the most obvious way to help Australians lower their electricity bill while responding to the climate crisis,” BRACE spokesperson Adrian Ford said.<\/p>\n
“Rooftop solar is already helping homeowners and aged care facilities reduce their energy bills, keeping costs manageable for residents.<\/p>\n
“By unlocking the skills and funding needed to set up projects targeted at renters and low-income groups, a community energy hub would ensure that everyone can access cheap, clean energy regardless of living arrangement or income levels.<\/p>\n
“It would also accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels, which are driving climate change and increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events.<\/p>\n
“Every single Australian has the right to affordable energy, and a safe and stable climate.<\/p>\n
“A strong commitment to supporting community renewable energy initiatives would help all parties deliver winning policies that benefit Australians now, and for decades to come.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
