After many years of asking, the MCU has finally given us a female superhero with her own solo film.<\/p>\n
Set in the 1990s, the story focuses on Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), a Kree alien soldier who has no memory of her past.<\/p>\n
The Kree are currently at war with the shape-shifting Skrulls and when the conflict brings Carol to Earth, memories of her past begin to surface.<\/p>\n
Teaming up with a young Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Carol seeks to uncover her past as her whole view of life comes into question.<\/p>\n
When the promotional material for this film claimed that Captain Marvel is \u201cone of the universe\u2019s most powerful heroes\u201d, they weren\u2019t kidding. The carnage she is able to unleash is a spectacle that would make her enemies think twice about fighting her.<\/p>\n
This doesn\u2019t mean Carol is perfect or overly-serious. She\u2019s a well-nuanced character who is strong, flawed and funny.<\/p>\n
Actually, a big portion of this film is pretty funny. I would even go as far to say its humour is on par with the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy.<\/p>\n
Since it\u2019s set in the 1990s, there are also plenty of jokes relating to this decade. One can only imagine how dated dial-up internet would seem to advanced aliens like the Kree and Skrulls.<\/p>\n
In regards to Fury, we finally get to see why he\u2019s been so chilled out about superheroes and aliens in all the previous MCU movies.<\/p>\n
We even learn how Fury lost his eye and let me tell you, it\u2019s unbelievable.<\/p>\n
While there are links to previous MCU films, Captain Marvel was more than able to tell its own story without relying on these links.<\/p>\n
Overall, this was a fun and action packed film that had an awesome story and a truly great female superhero.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
