PARKINSON\u2019S Victoria is preparing to launch a new clinical trial in Geelong this World Parkinson\u2019s Day (Thursday April 11).<\/p>\n
Designed to investigate the level of physical exercise optimal for sufferers\u2019 benefit, the \u201cInSearch\u201d research lecture will offer tools for those living with the degenerative disorder while also providing an opportunity for Victorians to learn about research into Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n
Parkinson\u2019s Victoria CEO Emma Collin said the lecture series will be presented in a factual and easy to understand format.<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing diagnosed with a progressive neurological condition is a life-changing experience,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cParkinson\u2019s Victoria\u2019s InSearch series provides an invaluable opportunity for people living with the condition to gain greater insight into the latest research in diagnosis, therapies and treatments.\u201d<\/p>\n
Running sessions in Geelong, Wangaratta and Melbourne, the lecture series will be hosted by Professor Meg Morris and Associate Professor David Finkelstein.<\/p>\n
Professor Morris, Professor of Healthscope and La Trobe University\u2019s clinical and rehabilitation practice, is a physiotherapist and movement disorders expert.<\/p>\n
Over the course of the event, Professor Morris will focus on the importance of exercise, physical activity and dance to the health and wellbeing in people living with Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n
Associate Professor Finkelstein, head of the Parkinson\u2019s laboratory at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health and Parkinson\u2019s Victoria chair, will share his research into new compounds and treatments for Parkinson\u2019s,
\nincluding two compounds currently in early stage clinical trials, new approaches to stem cells as well as gut and eye problems in Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n
Emma Collin said rolling out the educational program in Geelong will contribute to creating important awareness for the widely misunderstood disease.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are delighted to launch this year\u2019s InSearch series in Geelong on World Parkinson\u2019s Day to raise greater awareness of the impact on some 4,000 people living with the condition in Barwon and the South West,\u201d Ms Collin said.<\/p>\n
The Geelong lecture will be held on Thursday April 11 at Rydges Geelong (Corner of Myers Street and Gheringhap Street) at 1pm\u20133pm.<\/p>\n
Attendance to the lecture is free for Parkinson\u2019s Victoria members (plus one guest) or $20 per person for non-members.<\/p>\n
