THE Surf Coast Shire is seeking funding for two accessible toilets to be installed in Anglesea and Winchelsea.<\/p>\n
Councillors resolved at their September meeting to apply for two $100,000 state government grants to build the Changing Places facilities.<\/p>\n
To be built in 2018\/19, the facilities are large accessible toilets and change facilities with more space to meet the needs of people who require high support, and their carers.<\/p>\n
Each facility has a height adjustable, adult-sized changing bench, a tracking hoist system, and provides a safe and clean environment.<\/p>\n
If the grant applications are successful, a facility will be incorporated into the existing public toilets at Winchelsea Tea Rooms in Hesse Street as well as at the Four Kings car park area, Anglesea.<\/p>\n
The latter would be the first Changing Places facility on the Great Ocean Road and be delivered in partnership with Great Ocean Road Coast Committee.<\/p>\n
The toilets would supplement a similar facility being developed as part of the shire\u2019s Kurrambee Myaring Community Centre, under construction in Torquay North.<\/p>\n
All Abilities Advisory Committee member Cr Heather Wellington said if constructed, the Changing Places sites would make the Surf Coast more accessible and inclusive.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want people with high physical care needs to be able to access our community, and enjoy themselves while doing so.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany people take for granted how easy it is when they\u2019re out and about. These Changing Places facilities would better support people of all abilities to participate \u2013 whether that\u2019s stopping for a latte, sightseeing, shopping or a visit to the beach or river.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cr Rose Hodge said the two proposed sites were considered most suitable following an assessment of 18 locations across the Surf Coast.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can understand why this project has been supported by our All Abilities Advisory Committee.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey have lobbied to apply for these grants as they know how much the facilities will help local and visiting people with a disability, and their families.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey will help families to travel together \u2013 something that they are not always able to do because of the logistics involved.\u201d<\/p>\n
If successful in gaining the grants, the council will need to contribute $114,000 for the Anglesea facility and $63,000 for the Winchelsea facility.<\/p>\n
