	{"id":23961,"date":"2019-04-10T12:44:02","date_gmt":"2019-04-10T02:44:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=23961"},"modified":"2019-04-11T12:28:19","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T02:28:19","slug":"torquay-pupils-clean-up-local-beaches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/torquay-pupils-clean-up-local-beaches\/","title":{"rendered":"Torquay pupils clean up local beaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GRADE five and six pupils from St Therese Primary School rolled up their sleeves and participated in a beach clean-up on Thursday April 4.<\/p>\n<p>Teacher Gerard McCarthy said the school organises clean-ups twice a term at Fishos, an initiative supported by St Therese\u2019s grade six environmental leaders.<\/p>\n<p>On a glorious sunny morning last Thursday, the pupils picked up rubbish near the Torquay Surf Club and along Point Danger.<\/p>\n<p>Cigarette butts were among the biggest culprits (over 3,500 collected) as well as fishing lines, plastics (both hard and soft), glass and bottle caps.<\/p>\n<p>One of the two grade six sustainability leaders Eve Francis said it was great to see so many of her peers cleaning up the coast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we don\u2019t clean up, we are polluting the earth and killing marine animals,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>After collecting the litter, the pupils keep some of the items in glass jars that are stored in the classroom.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GRADE five and six pupils from St Therese Primary School rolled up their sleeves and participated in a beach clean-up on Thursday April 4.
