PROTECTING and enhancing Queenscliffe\u2019s significant and unique heritage will be the focus of a community workshop to be held in the Borough next week.<\/p>\n
Residents will be able to provide feedback and generate further discussion as council prepares to reassess and review not only the Borough\u2019s heritage buildings, but also its significant sites, precincts and trees.<\/p>\n
The project will include definitions, mapping and citations within council\u2019s previous heritage review from 2009 and consider amendments if needed, and will identify places of local, state and national heritage significance not included in the 2009 review.<\/p>\n
Queenscliffe mayor Bob Merriman said council\u2019s commitment to the preservation of history and heritage would not be possible without community feedback.<\/p>\n
\u201cCouncil wants to hear from the people who live in the Borough of Queenscliffe and people in the wider community about what is important to you, how we can improve our management of local planning and heritage, and better ways of activating our heritage sites,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Queenscliffe heritage review is an important element of council\u2019s custodial responsibilities in the preservation of areas of local, state and national significance in Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale. It acknowledges the personal significance of these sites to the people who live and visit here.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur goal is to work with the community to implement heritage guidelines in the Borough that protect the unique character of our region.\u201d<\/p>\n
Council will aim to develop a set of enhanced heritage citations that acknowledge new and upgraded heritage sites, such as Point Lonsdale Lighthouse Reserve and Shortland\u2019s Bluff, and guide our understanding and implementation of heritage controls to preserve our social history.<\/p>\n
The workshop will be held on Wednesday May 22 from 7pm at Queenscliff Town Hall.<\/p>\n
