POPULAR cycling event Amy\u2019s Gran Fondo will return to the Great Ocean Road this September with a new route, more ride options and entertainment thanks to support from the Victorian state government.<\/p>\n
Included as part of the Labor Government\u2019s \u201cRegional Events Fund\u201d, the event has welcomed more than 120,000 visitors to the region over the last eight years and aims to raise funds to create a safe bike-riding community in Australia.<\/p>\n
Amy\u2019s Gran Fondo \u2013 which is led by the Amy Gillett Foundation \u2013 is a tribute to champion cyclist Amy Gillett who was killed by a motorist while training in Germany in 2005.<\/p>\n
Minister for tourism, sport and major events Martin Pakula announced the return of the race last week.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re proud to be supporting this worldclass cycling event right here in Victoria, along one of the world\u2019s most spectacular coastlines,\u201d Mr Pakula said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMajor events like Amy\u2019s Gran Fondo capitalise on the tourism strengths of regional Victoria, giving a boost to local jobs and businesses on the Great Ocean Road.\u201d<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s event will include the 14km Family Fondo, 45km Medio Fondo and the 120km Gran Fondo. The 65km Gravel Fondo and elite men\u2019s and women\u2019s criterium racing will also return.<\/p>\n
