What a weekend it was for the Great Ocean Road Running Festival with cloudless skies, amazing sunrises and a full moon captivating all who were lucky enough to be in our region for this fabulous international event. And the great thing about it all was that events like this have a ripple effect that extends beyond just the weekend. On Monday morning, the coffee shops and food outlets were doing a great trade for a Monday in May while those that were still aching from the grueling road events, were wading waist deep in the still, cool waters of Louttit Bay and it was hard to comprehend that this is May in Lorne.<\/p>\n
For those that noticed the earth moving and machinery in operation on the Stribling Reserve Oval over the past week, it is just the start of what are the big things to come. With the underground electrical conduits in place, the large concrete pads are being poured for the light towers and framing is about to get underway for the new electronic scoreboard, its \u201caction stations\u201d. The four new light towers, once complete, will provide lighting to a standard never seen here in Lorne and provide an opportunity for night events in the future.<\/p>\n
The Stribling Reserve Committee of Management have been proactively managing the construction process and a good early call by their executive has led to the transfer of this Saturday\u2019s local football\/netball round from the Stribling Reserve in Lorne to the Irrewarra\/Beeac recreation reserve. In return, round 16 fixture on the 27th of July will now be played in Lorne. So, don\u2019t forget, if you\u2019re looking to watch the Dolphins this weekend, head to Irrewarra-Beeac, not Stribling Reserve.<\/p>\n
Whilst on local sport I love how my late grandfather would share that, in his junior days at the Lorne School, he and his fellow students would compete in their sports and athletics program against the school at Aireys Inlet. Nothing groundbreaking about that you may think, until it is revealed how they managed transport \u2013 \u201cshanks pony\u201d. That\u2019s right. Much to the disbelief of my children, the local students would set off early in the morning to walk to Aireys, complete their day\u2019s sport, and then walk home again. Imagine how many stops for phone charging it would take for our children to complete the same journey today?<\/p>\n
