THE Eden Project has started community consultation on plans to build a $150 million ecotourism project at Anglesea\u2019s Alcoa mine site.<\/p>\n
Over the next fortnight, the UK-based environmental charity will present its proposed concept to the people of Anglesea, which would see the unoccupied area become a \u201cdestination for immersive education and experiences\u201d.<\/p>\n
David Harland, CEO of Eden\u2019s global wing, said the project would amplify the region\u2019s environmental and cultural assets such as the Great Ocean Road and the Great Otway National Park.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve envisioned a place of extraordinary experiences, fusing science and wonder to immerse visitors in the extreme elements \u2013 fire, air, earth and water \u2013 which have shaped the Surf Coast region and its inhabitants for millennia, creating a must-see prelude for a journey on the Great Ocean Road. This concept will be a global exemplar of sustainability and environmental excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n
Initial calculations have estimated the project could employ up to 300 full-time staff and attract thousands of new visitors to Anglesea if it gets the green light.<\/p>\n
Eden and Alcoa held their first community dropin session on Monday and will share more details about the concept at another this Saturday June 1 at Anglesea Memorial Hall from 11.30am-2pm.<\/p>\n
