THE Surf Coast Multi-Purpose Indoor Stadium is moving closer to construction, with people now able to view images of what it will look like.<\/p>\n
The Surf Coast Shire says it is \u201cundertaking all necessary steps\u201d to prepare for the new stadium, which will be built in Torquay North.<\/p>\n
It will be formed by adding three courts to the existing single-court stadium at Surf Coast Secondary College and is planned to be complete by the end of 2020.<\/p>\n
The council has been working with Surf Coast Secondary College and potential user groups of the stadium throughout the design process. A planning permit application has also been prepared and will be publicly advertised soon.<\/p>\n
Shire mayor Rose Hodge said she was excited to see the stadium project progressing.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a Council, our goal is to support people to be healthy and active and this new community facility will help us achieve that, offering a space for fitness, sport and a sense of community.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt can also be used for various other activities including school and community events.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to maximise the use of the stadium. We have been working with user groups to tick off that goal and ensure it\u2019s a valued place for the Surf Coast community.\u201d<\/p>\n
The $13.5 million project is made up of a council contribution of $2.6 million, developer contributions of $2.9 million, and $8 million in grants from the state and federal governments via the Better Indoor Stadiums Fund and the Building Better Regions Fund respectively.<\/p>\n
The council resolved in December 2017 to transfer an estimated 3,176 sqm of council-owned land to the Victorian Department of Education and Training to create a single land title.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis will ensure we can make the best use of council land and school land,\u201d Cr Hodge said.<\/p>\n
