Geelong Performing Arts Centre is in the process of developing a \u201cReconciliation Action Plan\u201d in a bid to strengthen its connection with Australia\u2019s Indigenous groups through arts and culture.<\/p>\n
The city\u2019s iconic theatre venue\u2019s goal is to be more \u201cinviting\u201d and \u201cinclusive\u201d, making reconciliation integral to its day-to-day operations.<\/p>\n
GPAC chief executive officer Joel McGuinness said it\u2019s his \u201cdesire\u201d to ensure the centre creates connections to Aboriginal peoples\u2019 cultures, stories and art forms.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want all people to feel welcome and at home here at GPAC. We will continue opening our doors to community so that
\nwe can share all that we offer \u2013 specifically our education and arts programs for local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and all events and programs across our centre,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am in awe of 65,000+ years of lived culture in Australia by our First Nations Peoples and pay my respects to the
\nWadawurrung Traditional Custodians, the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. By walking together, we can find ways to keep telling the great stories of this great land and to celebrate cultural arts long into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
In celebration of National Reconciliation Week (May 27 \u2013 June 3), GPAC played host to a range of activities including native food tastings and a \u201clunchtime yarn\u201d with Norm Stanley.<\/p>\n
Community involvement in the development of the plan is encouraged.<\/p>\n
